Pakistan’s Sacrifices for Global Peace: Acknowledging a Legacy of Commitment to international stability through decades of dedication and resilience

In a powerful statement highlighting Pakistan’s contribution to global and regional stability, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir reiterated that Pakistan has made immense human and financial sacrifices in pursuit of peace—not only within its own borders but also globally. His remarks come at a time when the international community is gradually recognizing the country’s role in the fight against terrorism and its active participation in peacekeeping efforts.

A Nation Shaped by Conflict and Resilience

Over the past two decades, Pakistan has faced the brunt of terrorism, particularly in the aftermath of the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan in 2001. As militants spilled across the porous border into Pakistan, the country was dragged into a protracted and bloody conflict that saw bombings, assassinations, and coordinated attacks that targeted civilians, security forces, and institutions alike.

The Army Chief emphasized that more than 83,000 Pakistanis—both civilians and members of the armed forces—have lost their lives in the war on terror. This staggering human cost reflects the scale of the struggle Pakistan has endured. Moreover, the economic toll is equally daunting, with the country suffering financial losses estimated at over $250 billion. These sacrifices are often overlooked in global narratives that focus more on geopolitical alliances than the lived realities of the countries on the frontlines of war.

Contribution to International Peacekeeping

Beyond its borders, Pakistan has consistently demonstrated its commitment to global peace. As one of the largest contributors to United Nations peacekeeping missions, Pakistan has sent over 200,000 troops to various conflict zones since 1960. From the Congo to Sierra Leone, and from Haiti to Liberia, Pakistani soldiers have served with distinction, often in highly volatile and dangerous environments.

General Munir’s remarks underline that these contributions are not just symbolic; they represent a deep-rooted policy of promoting peace, even when the costs are high. Over 160 Pakistani peacekeepers have lost their lives while serving under the UN flag, a testament to the country’s willingness to put its soldiers in harm’s way for the greater global good.

Acknowledgement on the Global Stage

Recently, global leaders and institutions have started to publicly acknowledge Pakistan’s sacrifices. At international forums, including the United Nations and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, Pakistani officials have called for fair recognition of the country’s role in stabilizing the region. U.S. and Chinese officials have also commended Pakistan’s military leadership for playing a critical role in averting broader conflicts, especially amid rising tensions in South Asia.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump, in a surprising diplomatic gesture, hosted General Asim Munir at the White House in 2025, crediting him for helping de-escalate tensions between India and Pakistan. Trump noted that “two nuclear powers avoided war” due to military-to-military diplomacy, led in large part by the Pakistani army chief. While the political implications of such visits remain debated, the symbolism is clear: Pakistan’s role as a peacekeeper is gaining visibility.

The Domestic Front: Peace at a Price

Domestically, Pakistan continues to deal with the aftermath of its long fight against extremism. Military operations such as Zarb-e-Azb and Radd-ul-Fasaad have dismantled numerous terrorist networks, but the struggle for lasting peace is far from over. Security forces remain on high alert in sensitive areas, and new challenges—such as cyberterrorism and transnational crime—demand constant vigilance.

The Army Chief’s comments are particularly relevant in this context. They serve as a reminder to the international community that peace in Pakistan has come at a tremendous price. It is also a message to the Pakistani people: that the sacrifices made by soldiers and civilians were not in vain, and that they form the backbone of the country’s current stability and sovereignty.

A Call for Recognition and Support

Perhaps the most significant element of General Munir’s statement is the implicit call for international recognition—not just in words, but in policy and partnership. Pakistan seeks not only praise for its sacrifices but meaningful cooperation: in trade, technology, security, and diplomacy. For decades, its strategic location has made it a focal point of global power struggles. Moving forward, Pakistan wants to be seen not just as a pawn on the chessboard, but as a key player capable of contributing positively to global peace.

Conclusion

As the world grapples with new threats—from regional wars to climate change, from pandemics to cyber warfare—nations like Pakistan, which have weathered extraordinary storms, hold invaluable experience and perspective. General Asim Munir’s remarks are a timely reminder that the path to peace is paved with sacrifice—and that those who walk that path deserve acknowledgment, respect, and partnership.

Pakistan’s journey toward peace is far from over, but its commitment remains unwavering. And as the global community recalibrates its alliances and priorities, it would do well to recognize and engage with Pakistan not as a problem to be managed, but as a partner for peace.
